  20. 1.     Introduction
  21.  
  22. Welcome to Imagine the Universe! Contained on this 2-CD set you will find
  23. four astronomy and space science learning centers, individually captured
  24. from the World Wide Web in December of 2004.  Each site contains its own
  25. learning adventure full of facts, fun, beautiful images, movies, and
  26. excitement! 
  27.  
  28. We are continually adding material and features, so to see the very latest
  29. visit...

  38. The instructions below apply to either CD in this set.
  39.  
  40. Remember, you DO NOT need an Internet connection to run this CD-ROM!  This
  41. means that the external links on our Web sites have been made inactive 
  42. and makes the CD a stand-alone resource. We have, however, included the 
  43. Web addresses for many of these links so that you might follow them using 
  44. an Internet connection if desired. 
  45.  
  46. 2.     Quick Start-up
  47.  
  48. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.  If you are using a MacOS and 
  49. you have either Netscape or Internet explorer installed, the CD will 
  50. automatically launch your browser and display the contents page.
  51. Windows users should double-click on the CD icon,
  52. then double-click on the start.html document.  This will launch
  53. Netscape or Internet Explorer. After a few moments, you should see a Table 
  54. of Contents containing an outline of each of the learning centers included on 
  55. the CD-ROM.
  56.  
  57. If you do not have Netscape installed, your machine will offer a choice
  58. of applications with which to open.  You may choose Microsoft Internet
  59. Explorer (MSIE) if you have it.
  60.  
  61. 3.     Installation Instructions
  62.  
  63. A.  Installation Instructions for Macintosh Computers
  64.  
  65. To use this CD-ROM on your Macintosh computer, you will need a CD-ROM
  66. drive, and Macintosh System 7.1 or later.
  67.  
  68. It is also important to have the appropriate browser software installed on
  69. your Mac in order to run the interactive activities contained within two of
  70. the learning centers on the CD.  As a minimum requirement, we recommend
  71. MSIE 5 and Netscape 4.7, which have not only been tested by a team of 
  72. experts at our Laboratory, but also have the capabilities to run JavaScript 
  73. (which is necessary for the interactivity). If you aren't able to run 
  74. JavaScript, you can still use this CD, but you will have to print out 
  75. the activities.  (See Section E below  for setting your browser to run 
  76. JavaScript.)  Please note:  MSIE 4.0 does not fully support JavaScript, 
  77. so you will get error messages if you are using this version of browser.

  79. If, after loading the CD-ROM in your drive, the CD icon does not appear on
  80. your desktop, enable the Apple CD-ROM extension using the Extensions
  81. Manager control panel. If it still does not appear, consult the owner's
  82. manual that came with your Mac.
  83.  
  84. If your Macintosh does not recognize the CD-ROM format, and asks if you
  85. wish to initialize the disk, click on "Eject Disk". To enable your Mac to
  86. recognize this CD-ROM, enable the AppleScript extension, using the
  87. Extensions Manager control panel. This should move the AppleScript
  88. extension from the Extension (Disabled) folder to the Extensions folder.

  94. B.     Installation Instructions for PCs
  95.  
  96. To use this CD-ROM on your PC, you will need a CD-ROM drive, and Windows95
  97. or later.

  99. It is also important to have the appropriate browser software installed on

  114. C.     Special Printing Note
  115.  
  116. If you are in either the StarChild or Imagine the Universe! site, you 
  117. may need to use the "Show Me a Printable Version of this Page" link found 
  118. at the bottom of each page in order to print successfully. 
  119.  
  120. D.    Still having problems getting it to run properly?
  121.  
  122. If your computer does not have much memory, you may need to do the
  123. following in order to get Netscape and the additional software to run
  124. properly. In the Apple Memory control panel, Virtual Memory should be ON.
  125. Then, with Netscape running, go to  "Options Security Preferences" and
  126. disable JavaScript. Close Netscape and restart your machine.  Keep in mind
  127. that this action will also disable the interactivity on the CD.
  128.  
  129. E.    When Netscape is first installed, Java and JavaScript will
  130. probably be disabled.  In order to enable these, go to the top of
  131. your screen and select Edit -> Preferences.  Then select Advanced.
  132. Make sure that Java and JavaScript are selected.
  133.  
  134. F.     Playing Videos
  135.  
  136. Playing the videos found on this CD-ROM requires the installation of
  137. QuickTime. 
  138.

  145. Note for PC users:  Internet Explorer versions 5 and newer also 
  146. require the ActiveX plugin.  If you have problems playing the videos,
  147. go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/qtcheck/ to see if you
  148. have all the necessary software.

  151. (especially after reading section 3), email us at
  152. itu@athena.gsfc.nasa.gov and we'll try to help you get it going!

  154. G.      Playing MP3s
  155.  
  156. MP3s can be played with the QuickTime plug-in.  Most likely, your browser is 
  157. already configured to play these.  If it's not, you need to edit your browser 
  158. preferences for Applications.  Choose the option to add new.  Then use 
  159. MIME Type audio/x-mpeg and audio/mpeg and suffix mp3.  If you get a message 
  160. that these already exist, edit the current ones to add mp3 to the suffix list.  
  161. (Be careful, there may be more than one occurrence of each of these in your 
  162. list and you need to edit all of them.)
  163.  
  164. You may also need to edit your QuickTime preferences to play mp3s.  You can
  165. either go into your control panel and select QuickTime or start QuickTime
  166. and edit the preferences.  In the preference panel, select 'Plug-ins' and
  167. scroll down the list to make sure that mp3s are selected.  (In a PC, this 
  168. may require double clicking on the left hand side of the mp3 listing in 
  169. order to select it.)

  173. A.    Imagine the Universe!
  174.  
  175. The best way to discover the features of Imagine the Universe! is through
  176. your own exploration of the site. The Imagine! site can be explored using
  177. the navigation buttons at the top of each page. Here we highlight
  178. some features of particular note.
  179.  
  180.      Science-- 
  181. The bulk of the site, here you will be able to discover what we know about
  182. all kinds of objects in our Universe, e.g. black holes, quasars, pulsars,
  183. dark matter, and how we have come to know these things (e.g. timing
  184. analysis, spectral analysis, X-ray and gamma-ray detectors and satellites).
  185. Each topic is presented on 2 levels of technical detail, with lots of
  186. graphics, movies, and interactive quizzes for the user.

  189. Multimedia presentations, special exhibits, and interactive activities.

  192. A look at the satellites and instruments used to study the high-energy 
  193. universe.

  196. Ask a High-Energy Astronomer is a service available from our Web site in which
  197. users may ask our staff further questions about astronomy that may not have
  198. been answered by the Imagine! site. Here you'll find additional information
  199. about black holes, gamma-ray emission, the solar system, and astronomy as a
  200. profession.

  212.     Teacher's Corner-- 
  213. This section contains information about astronomy and space science
  214. resources for teachers, and lesson plans developed for mathematics,
  215. physics, and chemistry classes that use actual high-energy satellite data.
  216. These lesson plans are designed for use both with and without classroom web
  217. access.

  223.  
  224. A special area for younger astronomers ages 4-14, StarChild features
  225. interesting facts and activities about the solar system, stars, the Milky
  226. Way, black holes, galaxies, quasars, and space exploration. This site was
  227. written by middle school teachers, and is loaded with images, videos and
  228. activities. In addition, there is a glossary of terms. The site is
  229. presented at two levels, one for ages 4-9 and the other for ages 10-14.
